Joanne became a docent at the Duke University Museum of Art in 1992 and was actively involved in sharing her love of visual art with museum visitors of all ages (at DUMA and then the Nasher Museum) for more than 20 years. She was a gifted educator who had been an elementary school teacher and principal, and she helped all docents, gallery guides and Nasher staff become better teachers. She had a deep love of Pre-Hispanic art and also the latest gadgets and technology. Her wonderful sense of humor came through in all she did.
Katie Thorpe Kerr, T ’04
Katie is a member of the Nasher Museum’s national Board of Advisors and gives regularly to Duke’s Annual Fund and special exhibitions. She is a member of the steering committee for Nasher New York. Katie is an Assistant Vice President in the Contemporary Art Department at Sotheby’s in New York.
Katie, why is the Nasher Museum important to you?
I believe university museums exist in a really interesting space that allows art to be accessible in ways perhaps other museums cannot as easily achieve. There is a built-in community around the museum of students and faculty who can feel a kind of ownership and pride in the collection and the impressive exhibition program that the Nasher has developed. Working in the art world now, it is clear to me that more and more Duke alumni are entering into careers in the arts and I strongly believe that this is directly correlated to art being part of their collegiate experience. I was an art history major at Duke and my interest in the arts was strong from the beginning. I believe the presence of the Nasher on campus sparks that interest for the economics major, or the engineer – it can enhance and broaden the college experience. The Nasher has become such a renowned institution in such a short time, with exhibitions travelling to some of the most important museums in the world. This is a huge achievement and largely due to the incredible staff and the commitment from Duke to making the museum a priority. The Nasher has definitely made its mark and will only continue to do so.
Please tell us the story of your history with Duke’s art museum.
I became involved with the Duke University Art Museum as a freshman in 2000-01 and worked on a student-curated exhibition. We each picked a couple of pieces and did the research and wrote the wall text for the exhibition. It is such a rare opportunity to have a behind-the-scenes look into museums and it was such an important moment as a student to be able to have this experience of being one-on-one with the artwork. Even in the old museum building on East Campus this felt like a real privilege. Having worked at Sotheby’s for the 10 years since graduation, I am fortunate to continue to have intimate opportunities like this with art and there is the same spark of excitement every time it happens.
Why is planned giving important to you?
Philanthropy has always been very important to my family. From a very young age I grew up thinking everyone gave back to the schools or organizations that were important to them. I have learned that this is sadly not the case and it has certainly motivated me to become more involved with helping the places that have so profoundly shaped me. I give to the Nasher not only out of gratitude to the great university that I am so proud to have attended but to also serve as an example to my classmates and fellow alumni that we are vital to the continued growth and success of the place and the student experience. It is a serious responsibility that brings me great joy.
