The following events associated with Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art are free with admission and take place at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University unless otherwise noted.

FREE K-12 Educator Workshop
Register by February 6, 2012

February’s workshop will focus on the exhibition Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art.  During this FREE program, participants receive partial CEU credit and interdisciplinary curriculum-based materials to use in the classroom. Experiment with hands-on art activities, network with peers, enjoy refreshments and learn about field trip opportunities. Please note: the exhibition will not yet be on display at the time of this workshop.  All teachers who attend this workshop will receive a ticket to attend a Educator Open House on Monday, February 27.

"The Firebird"

Alexander Calder explores principles of art, form, balance and joy through his art. Now explore these defining principles musically with the North Carolina Symphony in an upcoming performance of The Firebird. The Firebird follows a musical form and finds a balance between good and evil. The good prevails, and the audience experiences an overwhelming sense of joy described musically by Stravinsky. Travel across Britten’s stormy North Sea, through Elgar’s most elegiac concerto and into the brash and bold Firebird Suite. Excitement thrives in this visit by two fast-rising stars: Christian Knapp, conductor, and Johannes Moser, cello. Meymandi Concert Hall, Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts, Raleigh.

Exhibition Opening and Artist Talk
7 PM Meet Lynne Warren, curator of contemporary art at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and artist Nathan Carter, whose work is part of Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art. Reception and cash bar to follow.

A Southern Season: Cooking and Calder

A Southern Season presents a cooking class with Sarah Schroth, Nancy Hanks Senior Curator at the Nasher Museum, in conjunction with Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art. Sarah will talk about the acquisition, installation and significance of this important exhibition. During her presentation, wine and a vivid, artful lunch will be served.
Menu: Piquillo Peppers with Seasoned Goat Cheese and Balsamic Drizzle; Colorful Roasted Beets with Smoked Duck and Pistachio Pesto; Poached Pears with Crème Anglaise and Raspberry Sauce. Fee: $30.

This is National Engineering Week!

With support from our local Society of Women Engineers (SWE) chapters, the museum will provide fun hands-on engineering-related activities for all ages on Thursday night.

Thursday is also Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day!

The Nasher Museum Café will also be open for dinner and/or a drink, from 5-8 PM (café closes at 9 PM). Reservations are encouraged for dinner.

FREE K-12 Educator Open House

Attend this FREE event exclusively for educators and tour the exhibition Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art.  This program will begin with a presentation by Kristi Lippire and Jason Middlebrook, contemporary artists from the exhibition.  Participants will then explore the exhibition independently and enjoy a light reception.

Educators who attend the workshop on February 9 will receive a ticket to this event.

Meet Kristi Lippire and Jason Middlebrook, whose work is part of Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art.

Annual Semans Lecture: Henry Petroski
7 PM Henry Petroski, Duke’s Aleksandar S. Vesic Professor of Civil Engineering and professor of history, will deliver the Annual Semans Lecture on the work of the engineer-artist Alexander Calder. Reception and cash bar to follow.

12 to 4 PM Gallery hunt, make-and-take crafts, live entertainment. Made possible in part by the Fox Family Foundation and Nordstrom.

7-10 PM Celebrate Calder with Duke students and the community.

First Thursday
5:30 PM Cash bar, 6 PM Gallery talk: Nasher Museum Director Kimerly Rorschach gives an introduction to films about Calder, including the famous 1955 film by Jean Pavileve,  Le Grand Cirque Calder 1927.

7-9 PM Create your own mobile while enjoying a pint!  In celebration of Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art, Nasher Museum staff will provide free materials and directions so you can create an artfully balanced sculpture to take home. No experience necessary.  Come to play and have fun!

Carolina Ballet: The Calder Project
Carolina Ballet presents "The Calder Project," a series of pieces commissioned by the Nasher Museum to complement Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art. Calder’s works, which use unusual materials to define space and explore form, balance, color and movement, will inspire a group of choreographers, including audience favorites Tyler Walters and principal dancer Timour Bourtasenkov. Art Squared – Kinetic Works Dancers Science in Motion: Balance, Patterns, & Laws of Motion Performance

FREE at Reynolds Theater, Duke University West Campus

The Nasher Museum partners with the Durham Arts Council’s CAPS program to expand your museum visit. Charlotte-based dance group Kinetic Works Dancers will present their Science in Motion: Balance, Patterns, & Laws of Motion performance. Science in Motion performances reinforce concepts from science curriculum with ties to the kinetic sculptures and mobiles of Alexander Calder. Connections are made through choreographic works including: Simple Machines and Tools, Life Cycles, and Newton’s Laws of Motion.
